BICYCLE PARKING

Bike storage or parking is imperative in order to improve and encourage bicycle travel in urban areas. However, bike parking and bike storage are of serious concern. Especially for those who live in high density settings such as apartment complexes, college dormitories etc. the issue of where to leave a bike while at home is a pressing concern. With the number of bike thefts recorded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the recent years averaging nearly 450,000, safety is a primary consideration in bike storage. Although secure bicycle parking or bike storage is not fool proof against theft, it is a definite deterrent from the thieves’ point of view. Secure bike storage and parking also provides reassurance to the bicyclist to leave his bicycle unattended while he attends to his work.

Bike storage is provided in a variety of settings, the three basic approaches being:
- Bike Racks: These open air devices, to which a bicycle can be locked, are useful for short-term parking and the primary method of bike storage
- Bicycle Lockers: These come in handy at sites that require long-term parking for a variety of users. They are stand-alone enclosures designed to hold one bicycle per unit in the bike storage facility
- Bicycle Lock-Ups: This is a site-built system of bike storage with secure enclosures that can hold one or more bicycles. These lock-ups are ideal for long-term bike storage/ parking for a limited number of regular and trustworthy users.

Bike storage equipment provides means for retaining the front wheel of a bicycle in an elevated position and means for supporting the rear wheel below the front wheel, in which the rear wheel support means comprises a support surface spaced from the ground and ramp wheel access means to the support surface.
